(Brussels)
by Anne-Cécile Vandalem / Das Fräulein (Kompanie)
Conception, Writing and Direction: Anne-Cécile Vandalem

Guest performance during FIND 2019

The year is 2025, the future has begun – and it’s quite a dark future. Europe is shattered by wars, resources are growing scarce and the climate is getting hotter and hotter. Greenland has broken free from Denmark and, thanks to global warming, has become a new El Dorado. The melting icecaps at the North Pole have uncovered vast deposits of Uranium, rare minerals, gas, and oil which have awakened the interests of international consortia, claims of ownership from and rivalries between several countries and the greed of anonymous large-scale investors. The »Arctic Serenity« sets sail from Copenhagen: a former cruise ship which suffered a terrible collision on her maiden voyage ten years ago in which environmental activist Mariane Thuring, who was on board as a singer in the ship’s band, died. The ship is now supposed to be towed to Nuuk in Greenland where she is to be converted into a luxury hotel. She contains six stowaways who have each been lured there by an anonymous letter. They all want to flee Europe to the north; and they are all, in very different ways, embroiled in Greenland’s independence from Denmark which ultimately involved selling off national resources, creating poverty and a new dependence for the island, and which was supposed to be celebrated on the maiden voyage of the »Arctic Serenity« before the catastrophe took place. As the boat arrives on the high seas, the tugboat suddenly and entirely unexpectedly cuts the »Arctic Serenity« loose and she is left drifting aimlessly with her stowaways in international waters. Accompanied by the ghostly sounds of the ship’s band, sudden twists, unexpected revelations, mutual accusations, machinations and arbitrarily shifting alliances amongst the passengers inexorably push the plot towards disaster in the Arctic Ocean.

Anne-Cécile Vandalem (*1979, Liège) studied acting at the Conservatoire de Liège. Since 2008 she has been producing her plays together with her company »Das Fräulein«. Her previous work »Tristesses« was presented at FIND 2017. In »ARCTIQUE« she once more combines theatre with live music and video and, employing a biting humour, mixes elements of crime drama, grotesque dystopia, political thriller and absurd comedy to tell of a dark future.

Automatenbüfett

by Anna Gmeyner

Burgtheater (Vienna)

Premiere 30 October 2020

Barbara Frey and the Vienna Burgtheater’s acting company have created a wonderfully tragicomic evening of theatre that puts the rarely performed author Anna Gmeyner back in the spotlight.

The provincialist Adam saves the beautiful stranger Eva from suicide by drowning and takes her along to the “Automatenbüfett”, the restaurant owned by his feisty wife. Eva’s arrival is an attraction to this largely male community and the shrewd Adam knows how to use it to further his plans. Anna Gmeyner’s characters are struggling desperately for civility but cannot help gradually revealing their own depravity. Martin Zehetgruber has designed the eponymous automat, which provides a looming backdrop to sometimes cringeworthily funny and sometimes heartrendingly sad encounters between the outstanding cast. Once again, director Barbara Frey has proved her talent for precise yet casual suspense – and an intelligent, contemporary look at gender-dependencies.

Theatertreffen-juror Petra Paterno about the production
“Automatenbüfett” is a rediscovery. Author Anna Gmeyner, born in Vienna in 1902, was a literary outsider throughout her life. “Automatenbüfett” would have been more than adequate to establish Gmeyner as a dramatist as early as the 1930s, but since she was a left-wing Jewish playwright, her writing was banned in Nazi-Germany. Gmeyner managed to escape to exile in Britain and never returned to Austria.

Metropolitan Opera - Roberto Devereux
The final opera in Donizetti’s “Tudor trilogy” focuses on the older Queen Elizabeth I, who is forced to sign the death warrant of the nobleman she loves. Sir David McVicar, who directed the Met premieres of Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda, returns to stage the final installment in the series. Acclaimed bel canto soprano Sondra Radvanovsky will sing Elizabeth I in Roberto Devereux as well as the title roles in Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda over the course of the season, a famous feat performed by Beverly Sills at New York City Opera in the 1970s and not repeated in New York since. Roberto Devereux also stars Matthew Polenzani as the title character; Elīna Garanča as Sara, the Duchess of Nottingham and the queen’s secret rival; and Mariusz Kwiecien as the Duke of Nottingham. Maurizio Benini conducts the first-ever Met performances of this work.

Эдвард Мунк. Великий и ужасный
R 21.5.2021 19:00

THE TOWN HALL AFFAIR

(New York)
by The Wooster Group
Based on the film »Town Bloody Hall« by Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker
Direction: Elizabeth LeCompte

Guest performance during FIND 2019

In »THE TOWN HALL AFFAIR«, legendary New York art collective The Wooster Group retrace »Town Bloody Hall«, a film by Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker that documents a debate on women’s liberation that took place at »Town Hall« in New York City in 1971. The evening’s host was, of all people, the paradoxical novelist Norman Mailer, known for his macho writing and liberal activism. He got into a fierce and furious intellectual sparring match with his guests who included cultural critic Diana Trilling, feminist writer Germaine Greer and radical lesbian journalist Jill Johnston. In »THE TOWN HALL AFFAIR«, directed by The Wooster Group founder Elizabeth LeCompte, excerpts of the film are played and overwritten with virtuosity via the simultaneous re-enactment on stage of its words and actions. But »THE TOWN HALL AFFAIR« is not merely a re-performance of the film; it is also its continuation. The play effectively illustrates that the discussions still prevalent today were already outlined in the early 1970s and have been carried forward as a discourse.

The Wooster Group, which combines video, film, sound and space in their productions in masterful ways, has been recognised as one of the most influential theatre companies since the 1970s and as forerunners of post-dramatic theatre and the theatre of deconstruction. The company was founded in 1975 and made its international breakthrough with the projects »Route 1 & 9« (1981) and »L.S.D. (… Just The High Points …)« in 1984. With »THE TOWN HALL AFFAIR«, they are again bringing one of their latest works to Berlin after a ten year hiatus and appearing at FIND for the first time.

A sweltering Italian summer evening. The romantic tension between Adina and Nemorino electrifies the air. But they are not alone. A group of friends puts their love and social standing at risk.

Director Marcos Darbyshire’s contemporary version of Donizetti’s comic opera L’elisir d’amore is a coming-of-age opera exploring identity and loss of innocence. ‘There will be a lot of laughter, but with rather than at the characters’ promises the director. TRANS (més enllà)

(Barcelona)
by Didier Ruiz
Direction: Didier Ruiz
Globe

Guest performance during FIND 2019

In »TRANS (més enllà)«, we encounter seven people of different ages and genders on stage. What they all have in common is that the body in which they feel at home today is not the one in which they were born. They were unable to find their inner selves in the external identity of man or woman that was prescribed to them. Their voices, their bodies, their experiences occupy a dissident position in a society which only recognises binary gender identities. These people challenge those norms as well as our own capacity for openness. Forced by society, culture, family or upbringing to exist in harmony with a body at odds with their interior emotions, thoughts and desires, they all decided at different times or stages in their lives to escape from this foreign body and take on a new gender identity. They tell of their transformations, of the necessity of making their voices heard and of those who listened and those who preferred to close their eyes and ears; of the hostility or support from family, friends and the workplace. Through their memories and experiences, we encounter the people who unexpectedly rejected them, new friends, despair, hope and the big loves of their lives, and accompany them on their often arduous journeys to become themselves.

Didier Ruiz (*1961, Béziers) is an actor and director. Theatre is a place for him where people who are marginalised by or excluded from public discourse can make their voices heard. With his »La compagnie des Hommes«, he has worked with groups including long-term prisoners, old people and adolescents who are rarely seen on stage. With »TRANS (més enllà)«, he is continuing his artistic and political exploration of a type of theatre that aims to bring people into contact with each other, overcome social divisions and tell the stories of those overlooked in society with respect, humility and empathy.

The French Riveria (la Côte d'Azur) is well-known for its beautiful beaches and the luxurious cities of St Tropez, Cannes and Nice. Just along the coast, Provence offers up beautiful landscapes, sights, colors and smells which have inspired artists from Van Gogh to Cezanne and Picasso. Food markets, vineyards, natural parks, lavender fields, olive trees and sleepy mountain villages fill up the region. The beginning of the Alps means that the region isn’t just famous for the coastal lifestyle, but also the rich mountain culture and the outdoor activities that come with it. Finally, Marseille is a rebellious, north-African-influenced port city famous for its fish soups, aniseed liquor pastis and games of petanque. The good food, the good weather, the slowed-down pace of life and the Southern sense of humor are a stark contrast to the pace and quality of life elsewhere in France. In this tour, we will explore art history, food and culture and look at the Côte d'Azur, Provence and Marseille.
